Day One in Iceland

Day One in Iceland

We had a smooth flight. Rachael was the only one able to get some sleep. She is small enough to lean over with her head on the foldaway table. Even with an empty seat next to me I couldn’t get very comfortable, and the person behind me wasn’t into sleeping and kept bumping my seat at random intervals.

It was raining when we landed and there was no jetway. I tried to feel sorry for the people in shorts who didn’t plan for the 45 degree weather and rain, but I was too tired. We were well prepared and picked up the Jeep we hired (same model as Rachael’s back home) and drove into Reykjavík. So far Rob approves of the roads. Not like the skinny ones he drove on in Scotland.

I wish I had taken a picture of the cinnamon rolls and danish we bought for breakfast at a tiny bakery we found. No wonder it was jammed with people. The best pecan danish I’ve ever had! We had to take our treats back to the car to eat them before heading to Hallgrimskirkja Church.

The church is beautiful inside and out and there was an organist playing the gorgeous organ.

After the church we went to the National Museum of Iceland. No pictures, but a nice museum to visit. Really good wi-fi to support everyone listening to the audio guide. There were lots of visitors. Maybe because it was still raining.

We are staying at the Hotel Viking just outside Reykjavík in Hafnarfjörður. These are not my pictures because it is still raining. You can wear a Viking helmet and eat at the attached restaurant, but we went out to find food. Shawarma for me and Rachael and pizza for Rob and Robin. Then a quick trip to a grocery store for some supplies and we are ready to hang out in the cottage and let our raincoats dry.

Interesting note on the hot water. It smells of sulphur because it comes from a hot spring. The hot tub, which Rachael visited, is also water from the hot spring.
