From Westfjords to Akureri

We stayed the night in an apartment Sudavik. Nice little fishing village at the North of the Westfjords. Very spacious, and excellent views.

On the way onward we encountered many of the "suicide-prone" sheep that compete with cars for right of way.

As well as many groups of Icelandic horses.

Also saw some 3D painted crosswalks, imtended to make them more obvious to drivers. I've seen these in online news reports but this is the first time IRL.

As with the previous days, driving through the fjords is beautiful. Everyone agrees the photos fail to capture the grand scale of the landscape here.

Along the way to our next stay at a hostel in Akureri, we made a stop at the witchcraft museum. Many witches were whipped and some burned at the stake in the Westfjords.

And then a stop to see Hvitserkur, a standing rock formation in the sea along a black sand beach.

Its said to be a frozen troll or a sea monster. I see the latter...an animal of some sort with the head on the left drinking water.

I've seen black sand in photos but it's my first encounter. Feels like sand except weighs less in your hand than the more common light colored variety.

My first time paying to use a toilet with Apple Pay!

Last stop at a famous earth roof church called Vidimyrkirkja.

And finally arrived in Akureri!

The curbless streets are common here. Ann Arbor just installed our first of these on State Street adjacent to the UM campus. I think they're great!

Home sweet home (for the night)
